The approach SpeakUP takes is:
- Person-centred and individualised.
- Focused on the young person and their goals they set for themselves.
- A capacity-building approach – more about what the young people learn rather than what they achieve.
Sessions for young people
Young people will attend 6 sessions with the facilitator. Depending on the age and support required, parents/ allies may need to play a role in the sessions. During the sessions, the young person will identify and express a small, achievable goal related to participation at school and then work through any challenges they might come up against.
Your Facilitator will provide coaching support to help the young person identify and achieve their goal, but parents/ allies will be the main supporters. Your role will be to ensure the young person achieves their personal goal, e.g., helping the young person to voice their need with their school community.
Sessions for parents/ allies
While the focus is on the young person building the skills and confidence to achieve their goal, an important part of SpeakUP is giving parents and allies the skills and confidence to support their young person through the journey. We have built in some learning modules as well as opportunities for reflection and discussion with other allies. As shown in the overview diagram, parents/ allies will need to complete 2 online modules, as well as attend 2 online group sessions with other allies.
